PROJECT - EXPERIENCING VILLA MAIREA - (part 1)

"the centre in the clearing within the forest" - Vitruvius, book2

IMAGES:

(est 1938-1939)
-careful integration with its natural surrounds
-there is natural synthesis between exterior and interior spaces
-also, an inherent harmony between man and nature exists

we see similar themes as Aalto was greatly inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater (1937) -

STRUCTURAL RELATIONSHIPS:

As illustrated on the left, we can see relationships with the columns throughout the building, connecting the interior and exterior. Diagonal and rectilinear placements of the columns also anchor spatial extensions to the exterior.

SPATIAL ARTICULATIONS:
According to Aalto, the quality of an architecture is measured by its inclusive qualities which is founded upon the flexibility of its many different formal relations and is the outcome of a methodical development and coordinated structural relations.
These diagrams show his ideas regarding spatial relationships - The Centre-Perimeter-Outer layout:

centre-perimeter interchange      perimeter visibility     perimeter-outer interchange    enclosure/protection      access through perimeter
